You probably know that the State of California requires smog tests or emissions inspection on most vehicles. A smog inspection keeps your vehicle running as clean and efficiently as it possibly can. Here are the facts.
Smog inspection is mandatory for registering a vehicle. If you’re new to the state, registration must be done within 20 days of establishing residency.
Counties that mandate a smog inspection require that inspection every two years. It’s a two-part exam, with the inspector first checking for black, white, or blue smoke from the tailpipe, then connecting a code reader device to the vehicle’s diagnostic connector and checking for emissions-related trouble codes. Along with a visual inspection at the tailpipe and check of the computer’s trouble codes, the inspector will also check the vehicle’s gas cap, Check Engine light, exhaust gas recirculation system, fuel evaporative canister, and ignition timing.
Electric vehicles, vehicles older than model year 1975 and diesel vehicles older than 1997 (with a gross weight of over 14,000 lbs) are exempt from smog testing.
Vehicles that are six or less model years old can pay an annual smog abatement fee rather than providing a biennial smog certification.
Testing fees, certificates, and transmission fees may vary by vehicle, one of our experts can help you understand the cost. Should your vehicle fail the inspection, you have 30 days to submit to another test at no charge, as long as you take the vehicle to the same testing facility.
